Star Times Uganda Premier League.
Wednesday 24th October 2018.
Mutesa Two Stadium-Wankulukuku.
Nyamityobora FC 2-1 Mbarara City FC.
Nyamityobora FC came from behind to beat Mbarara City FC in one of the most famous derbies in western Uganda’s football, as the two sides did battle at the Mutesa Two Stadium-Wankulukuku on Wednesday.
The moment that probably best summed up Nyamityobora FC’s performance arrived in the 89th minute when second half substitute Joseph Akandwanaho’s disheveled finish from close range stole the headlines.
Mbarara City took the lead through center back Mukundane Hilary’s first half header, but Charles Musige equalized on 72 minutes before substitute Joseph Akandwanaho sealed the victory, one minute from time.
Mbarara City FC’s football was the more sophisticated in the first half but those neat passing exchanges in midfield often fell down once they reached more advanced positions.
The talk around the game dominated the streets of Mbarara City, every where you looked, every fan, young and old, male and female were talking about the derby though sad that the region’s biggest game was going to be played away from the land.
However the game brought passion, entertainment and more importantly determinations from the two sets of players, mostly from the Banyakare to not only grab the headlines but to give their travelling fans something to boast about.
It’s been over two years since the last Mbarara derby, but Nyamityobora and Mbarara City did battle once again on Wednesday, which granted the Banyakare their first ever bragging rights over their neighbors.
The win marked James Odoch’s first win in the Star Times Uganda Premier League following a bad run that saw the Banyakare lose their first three fixtures.
The Banyakare who ended Wednesday 14th in the table, have now taken three points from a possible twelve while their visitors Mbarara City FC have six points out of the possible twelve.
Mbarara City have never won a league game away from home since they earned promotion.
