Mbarara City FC registered ninth win in ten preseason games after edging out Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC on a cold Wednesday evening at Kakyeka stadium in Mbarara.
Former Buwekura county forward Umar Mihinza sent the City fans into jubilation with a cool finish six minutes from time.
Umar should have doubled the host’s advantage deep in stoppage time but he was denied by the brilliance of goal keeper Fabian Mutombora who produced a great save.
Substitute Karim Ndugwa’s shot went through a number of Vipers’ defenders legs before it found Umar unattended to in front of goal before he shot past goalkeeper Fabian Mutombora at near post.
The left footed forward has now scored in back to back games for the Ankole Lions having scored the winner against Wakiso Giants on 18th August, he was on target forth time in Mbarara City colors having netted against Wakiso Giants FC, Kyazanga Vipers FC, Mbarara Ghetto FC and Vipers SC.
Livingstone’s Mbabazi side created too little in the first half after failing to register a short on target but was more creative in the second half when goal scorer Muhinzi Umar forced a great save from the Vipers’ custodian Mutombora after forty eight minutes.
The League Champions could have scored twice in the first half but Mzee Dan Serunkuma missed a clear chance from close range while Bashir Asiku headed out from four yards.
There was more flare from the Ankole lions after the introduction of Barssey Methodius, Karim Ndugwa and Siraje Musindo as the three substitutes constantly kept the Vipers’ defense on their toes.
Vipers coach substituted captain Tadeo Lwanga after half time, which gave a lot of freedom to Ivan Eyam to run passed the Vipers’ midfield.
Mbarara City have now recorded their sixth consecutive home win in preseason, a run that has seen them score fifteen goals.
The Ankole Lions missed the services of former Onduparaka FC centre back Muhammad Rashid who suffered a knock in training on Tuesday but on loan striker Karim Ndugwa who joined from Wakiso Giants FC arrived in time to make his debut.
The win also means the Ankole Lions have defeated Vipers SC for the first time after drawing one and losing two of their previous three meetings.
For the League Champions, they failed to find the back of the net for the first time against Mbarara City FC, also their first at Kakyeka Stadium, having netted in their last two visits.
City also maintained their unbeaten against Uganda Premier League sides in season build up games managing draws against KCCA FC (0-0) and twice against Vipers SC after today’s win and a 1-1 draw last season.
Vipers Head coach highlighted the importance of improving the performances of the team before the season starts later in September.
“For us we have to keep improving, I have to improve this team, we were in Mbale for two weeks and we just came back from there, this game was good to see our performance”. Said Martinez Espinoza.
“We made some mistakes back there but we will work on that during the week and before we start the league we’ll do better, we have a Martinezlot of time to do that” Added
Vipers SC will have another build up match at Kakyeka on Thursday when they take on Uganda Premier League new comers Nyamityobora FC.
