Mbarara: Family of eight chased from the village over ‘unending’ theft


MBARARA: Residents of Karugangama cell, Katete ward Nyamitanga division Mbarara Municipality yesterday finally expelled the long suspected 45-year-old man and his other eight family members over the alleged ‘unending’ theft.

 The final dismissal was declared in a  community security meeting convened by the Chairperson LC1 Karugangama, Jaffari Mpiima witnessed at this time by police who had nothing to comment from furious utterance from rowdy audience.

The accused head of the affected family identified as Emmanuel Mwonge was first chased at the beginning of October this year and fled to Mbarara police station where he took refuge after the resident wanted to lynch him and the family.

Mpiima thanked the residents for being patient and kind with Mwonge and his family members but cautioned them to avoid taking laws into their hands.

He advised the people in the areas to make use of their established chairpersons’ neighbourhood watch teams in reporting all suspected wrongdoers and strange people who come into their areas to ensure security and peace.

Police officers who couldn’t reveal their identities thanked the gathering for being cooperative and listening to advice given by police and their local leaders and making the lawful decision as a community without shedding blood.

Karugangama residents at the closing of the meeting raised shs 86,300= to help Mwonge  pack family property and leave the area, but was granted mercy to sell his piece of land and never to have hopes of coming back at anytime to live in Karugangama cell for being a habitual thief of chicken, foodstuff, ducks among others, a vice he had recruited his wife and children into.
