Kanungu: Kidnapped Businessman released after family pays USD 7,500


Mugabe Robert, a businessman who was kidnapped by gunmen on 03rd August,
2018 in Queen Elizabeth National Park has been released after family
members paying 7,500 US Dollars ransom.

Mugabe (38), a resident of Busoni village, Kituba parish, Nabiswera Sub
County in Nakasongola district, together with three other businessmen;
Patrick Bukora, 40, a resident of Migyera cell, Nassolo Sauda, 40, a
businesswoman from Kiyola cell, all from Nakasongola district, Julius
Saturday, 36, a businessman from Nsolo B cell, Western division-Busia
Municipality, were waylaid by gunmen near Southern Gate Army Barracks in
Kanungu district.

They were travelling in an Isuzu Canter registration number UAB 196J which
was transporting Fish from Kasese district to Ishasha in Kanungu district.  The
victims were intercepted by a group of armed men, dressed in clothes akin
to the uniforms of the Democratic Republic of Congo National Army, who
emerged from the national park and started shooting randomly.

The three were shot in the legs while Mugabe was kidnapped. The gunmen
later called on one of the victim’s using Magabi’s telephone number and
demanded for 20,000 US Dollars ransom for his release.

The police spokesperson for Kigezi region, Elly Maate confirms that Mugabe
was escorted by gunmen up to Ishasha border untied and released today in
the wee hours after the victim’s relatives and friends contributed and
wired their money through mobile money.

Maate says that the victim who has been kidnapped in a forest in Eastern
Democratic Republic of Congo was only given posho and beans as food. Maate
says that the gunmen who were speaking Rukiga- Runyankole and some
Kiswahili languages bargained with family members from USD 20,000 up to USD

He also says that the gunmen completely destroyed Mugabe’s telephone
immediately after the money was withdrawn.  Maate also says that the victim
is now at Kihihi police station helping police to trace the gunmen.He adds
that this is an organized crime that calls for vigilance and resources.
