Opposition Punch Holes In Government’s proposal to Buy Maize Produce from farmers

The shadow minister for Agriculture Francis Gonahasa says that whereas the government price of 500 shillings to buy off farmers’ maize is a better option, it’s intervention is not good enough and not sustainable.

Government early this week announced an intervention to rescue the demoralized farmers following a huge drop in maize prices across the in the country where by in some parts of the country a kilo of maize costs between 150 to 200 shillings.

Gonahasa who is also Kabweri county MP wonders how government reached this unrealistic price of 500 shillings since farmers have a lot of input to produce the maize.

Gonahasa believes the current situation should prompt government to re-introduce co-operatives right from the village to the district level that will ensure quality control that will determine better prices from the international markets.
