Minister Elioda Urges Higher Institutions On Research
The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovations Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye has challenged higher institutions of learning to focus on purposeful education especially based on research and innovations.
Dr. Tumwesigye said this yesterday while officiating as the chief guest at the official opening of Bishop Stuart Exhibition and launch of agricultural projects at the institution.
The Minister said the purpose of a university is to teach, do research, and innovations to produce students with employable skills to solve societal challenges.
He noted his ministry is willing to support institutions committed to investing in doing research and innovations through the innovation fund support and establishing of science and technology parks.
The Vice Chancellor Bishop Stuart University Prof Mauda Kamatenesi said the university is committed to skilling students in practical aspects of life irrespective of the courses they are pursuing citing an example that all students at this campus are encouraged take of agri-business studies.
The University Chancellor Rt Rev Sheldon Mwesigwa said the exhibitions are key not only in marketing the institution but also demonstrating practical skills.
He expressed concern that most people in the academia are into theory than practicals which he says still makes education not better placed to solve societal challenges.
